This was inspired by Tian Min Lim who is a fellow member over at Culinary Kitchenette which is an Fb group filled with the most loving. Despicable Me Minion Bento I still have two Hello Kitty bentos to share before this, but since the Minions from Despicable Me are all the rage this week, I reckon these fellas deserve to cut the queue and make their appearance on the blog first. 😛 Minions are rice coloured with mashed egg yolk. Heat cooking oil in a Tamagoyaki Nabe (rectangular omelet pan) on low heat, pour the egg mixture in the pan and spread over the surface. ‪Cook the egg until the edges begin to dry, then ‬start rolling‪.‬ To be honest, I'd never heard of Despicable Me until a few weeks ago when I started seeing lots of Minions (the little, yellow creatures) bentos almost everywhere. I was just wondering what the big fuss was about ;).
Instructions to make Bento with Minions from "Despicable Me":
- Use one of the eggs to make a boiled egg. This will be the eye..
- Make a thin omelet with the other egg and make a round hole in the omelet. This will be the body. It's easy to make a hole if you use a cookie cutter!.
- Cut the nori to make the glasses, eye, mouth and clothes..
- Place the nori on top of the sliced cheese and cut it out to make a base for the nori..
- Make the shape of the body with the boiled egg and chicken rice. Arrange the thin omelet on top of the body. In the photo I used just half of the boiled egg..
- Place the parts made from the nori on top… and add some teeth made from cheese. If can easily make rounded teeth using a small flower-shaped cookie cutter!.
- Fill up the rest of the bento box… done!.
- This time I used a flower cutter from a 100 yen deco bento kit and the back of a cookie cutter..
I have to admit that the characters are pretty cute though, that's the reason why I decided to join in the hype and make a Despicable Me themed bento too :). If your kids are anything like my boys, they are huge fans of the Minions from the Despicable Me movies. When I heard that they were going to be starring in their very own movie I was ecstatic. I decided in honor of the new movie I would make my boys a Minions bento lunch box. For the Minion's G symbol, use a knife or scissors to cut out from nori.
